A land rich in historyIt is a truly fascinating adventure to discover a city through the marks left by history.Discovering Modena takes us back to remote times: although the Etruscans, Ligurians and Celts lived in what was to become the future Mutina Romana , the fertile land around the town was already inhabited in Neolithic times. ![]()
This is witnessed by finds of "terramara", the typical villages established in Emilia around the mid-II Millennium,
just a few kilometres from the city, at Montale di Castelnuovo Rangone. The excavations have been opened for visits and tourists can now stroll around the Terramara di Montale Archaeological Park and the Open-Air Museum with a life-size reconstruction of part of the "terramara" village, a landfill and two large homes furnished with pottery, tools, weapons and garments - all faithful reproductions of the originals of 3550 years ago. The Open-Air Museum (on opening days) offers demonstrations of experimental archaeology, pottery manufacture and baking and work to produce weapons and tools.
The Park also organises regular initiatives dedicated to younger visitors.Permanent Exhibitions, Epigraphic and Archaeological Museums IAT
